All-time Spurs great Tim Duncan gave the last 19 years of his life to San Antonio. With his legendary career having concluded, the city is finally giving back to him.
Duncan officially announced his NBA retirement -- well, technically, the Spurs made the announcement for him -- 10 days ago, and his team's hometown wasted no time celebrating the epic achievements of the past two decades.
On Monday, San Antonio mayor Ivy Taylor announced on Twitter that in honor of Duncan's longtime #21 Spurs jersey, July 21st would go down as "Tim Duncan Day." Once the 21st rolled around, she released this complimentary letter to officially kick off the holiday:
Today is #TimDuncanDay! Hope all @spurs fans join the virtual love fest! #GoSpursGo @COSAGOV @BexarCounty pic.twitter.com/gQfeRut5vj
— Mayor Ivy R Taylor (@IvyRTaylor) July 21, 2016
The Constitution-esque letter praised Duncan's philanthropy, humility and athletic achievements, but it was only the beginning of the festivities. Later on Thursday morning, the town's City Hall raised a banner to honor its hero:

Not to be outdone, the San Antonio Fire Department soon joined the shenanigans with this fine effort:

And then, of course, there are the discounts.
Stores across the city released special deals to celebrate Duncan's career. If this year's results are any indication, July 21st will be a greatly anticipated day for residents for years to come. KSAT, a local ABC affiliate, released this list of discounted items in the city due to the holiday, most notably a McDonald's deal of 21-piece boxes of chicken nuggets instead of their normal 20.
Ultimately, whether you've come to root for or detest the Spurs during their decades-long run of NBA dominance, we can all agree that this holiday was done correctly.
