Powder blue is synonymous with the University of North Carolina, but for this weekend, the choice color in Chapel Hill is green.

The Tar Heels football program is partnering with REPREVE, a sustainability company that uses plastic bottles to create fibers used by companies including Ford, Haggar and Volcom. During the UNC-Illinois game Saturday at Kenan Memorial Stadium, UNC's cheerleaders and dance team will wear green instead of Carolina Blue.

The female dance team uniforms are made from 20 recycled bottles each, while the male uniform requires 25 bottles. UNC's mascot, Rameses will wear a jersey made of 30 recycled bottles.

The student section will receive REPREVE "Turn It Green" shirts and rally towels. The company says 20,000 plastic bottles will be turned into the materials for game day, as a frame of reference.

Over 20,000 recycled plastic bottles were used to make the shirts, jerseys, & towels that will be given away on Saturday. Four lucky students will get the opportunity to compete in the “Make the Smart Throw Challenge” for two $1,000 scholarships toward textbooks during the halftime contest. #TurnItGreen
