One man's second-place trophy is another man's treasure.
After finishing one point behind Greg Bretz at the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships in Colorado, Shaun White figured 11-year-old Connor Tripp would appreciate his trophy more than he would. So as White left the course he handed his trophy to Connor.
"I thought he was just letting me hold it," Connor told USA Today.
As it turned out, White was giving Connor his award.
"He's a really good snowboarder and he's really nice," Connor said.
White, who won gold in the halfpipe at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, is attempting to qualify for the Sochi games in both halfpipe and slopestyle.
White holds the X Games record for gold medals (13 for snowboarding, two for skateboarding) and overall medals (18 for winter sports, five for summer sports). So it's safe to say that White has a big trophy case, but a second-place award from the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships probably wouldn't be displayed prominently. For a boy like Connor Tripp, however, the trophy may mean more than White will ever know.
